Many think that the Tall Man is Death, an alien, an interdimensional traveler, or even the Devil. Personally I have always he felt he was a time traveler from the future.

My theory is the Red Planet is Earth in the future after both wars and the environment have taken their toll. Jebediah was in some way in his lineage from the past, as is Mike (I personally think he is a young version of him).
