The horror-fantasy series Lost Girl just premiered on the SyFy channel this past Monday, following the season premiere of the US version of Being Human. Clearly SyFy aims to appeal to the same audience for both shows. And, I think they’ve succeeded well and are giving American horror fans another good show to watch. It should be noted, though, that show is not that new. In fact, it’s a Canadian show, which is entering its third season, having premiered in 2010 there! But, it already has garnered good reviews and cult following over there, so we are definitely long overdue for it in the U.S.
The first episode introduces us to a sleaze-bag who has slipped a mickey into cute blonde Kenzi’s (Ksenia Solo) drink. He is about to take advantage of her, when a smoking hot bartender Bo (Anna Silk) comes to save her. She seduces him, then kisses him, and takes his lifeforce. She then leaves with the still drugged out Kenzi. Though scared of Bo at first, after all she witnessed the whole thing, she quickly befriends her. She learns that aside from the deadly power she witnessed Bo can also get people do what she wants via her touch which temporarily seduces them. Unfortunately, her last murder has drawn the attention of two detectives, who are actually Fae, AKA supernatural creatures. She is kidnapped and soon learns something she never knew about herself, that she is a succubus. She is forced into a test to see if she can survive and must then choose between the Light and Dark tribes, as all supernatural beings must. Kenzi, meanwhile, is determined to find her.
Based on this first episode the tone of the series seems to be light and fun. It also comes off as very sexy. There is some light lesbian teasing, as our heroine uses her powers to seduce and control two attractive women (an Asian waitress and a blonde scientist). The series earned itself a TV-MA rating, and clips of future episodes seem to hint at more sex. There is certainly a good amount of cursing to keep the rating warranted. Not much in the way of gore, but hey this is only the first episode.
The cast is very likable, with the absolutely gorgeous Silk being a great heroine. As far as my knowledge goes this is the first time a succubus has been made into a TV or even movie protagonist, so that in itself is interesting. Solo makes for a cute and fun sidekick to Bo. Horror fans will also be happy to see that the stunning and sexy Emanuelle Vaugier, who played a werewolf in TV series Supernatural and has been seen in movies like Saw II, plays the delicious and evil The Morrigan, the leader of the Dark side.
There are a variety of demons and monsters on display in the first episode along, and the FX for them are good. I’m excited to see what other monsters will make appearances as the show goes on. There is a good deal of intrigue set up, as well. And, I know future episodes will have her confronting various evils things, including the villains already set up in this episode.
In all, I think fans of shows like Buffy, Angel, and Grimm may want to give this one a shot. It has a lot of potential and certainly already has my interest, so you know I will be tuning in next week to see what happens next.
