Upcoming Horror Movies We Can't Wait to Watch

Written by: Goreboy

A brand new year is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about what horror movies we are most looking forward to in 2012.  There will be a ton of new horror movies in 2012.  Some of the movies we have been waiting for a long time to see, some have a great cast or director and some just look like they will be fantastic.

Love the idea or hate it we are going to see some additional films added to a couple of our favorite franchises with Halloween 3D and Leatherface 3D aka The Chainsaw Massacre 3D.  Both come out in October 2012 and we know you will be heading to the theater to see them.

Of course this is not a complete list of upcoming horror movies in 2012, it’s just the horror films we are the most excited to see this year.

John Dies at the End

John Dies at the End
Release Date: Sundance January 25, 2012
John Dies at the End Trailer

John Dies at the End started gaining momentum as a web series in the early 2000s and then as a series of free online written versions over the following years. The story finally became a published novel in 2009 and the Master of Horror Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Incident on and Off a Mountain Road) promptly bought the rights to the book, wrote a screenplay and started filming. The grand unveiling of John Dies at the End is planned for the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012, and there are legions of grassroots fans chomping at the bit to see what Coscarelli has done with this trippy and outrageous story.

Synopsis: It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is under way, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can't.

The Woman in Black Poster

The Woman in Black
Release Date: February 3
The Woman in Black Trailer

The Woman in Black has so many reasons to be eagerly anticipated by horror fans, as well as a potentially huge cross-over audience. First the film is based on a best selling novel from the 80s that later became a stage play, and then a television movie with a screenplay written by Nigel Kneale of The Quatermass Experiment fame. Hammer Film Productions, which adapted Quatermass to the big screen and is loved the world over for revitalizing the horror genre with classics such as The Curse of Frankenstein and The Horror of Dracula, took on the 2012 film adaptation of The Woman in Black in a surge to put themselves back on top of the horror movie heap.  If all that weren't enough, this film is to star none other than Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, in his first major role after conquering the world in the most iconic series of films of this generation. Add long-time character actor Ciaran Hinds who played Dumbledore's brother in the final Harry Potter installment and you've got a lot of eyes anxiously awaiting the release of The Woman in Black.

Synopsis: The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.

The Cabin in the Woods poster

The Cabin in the Woods
Release Date: April 13, 2012
The Cabin in the Woods Trailer

The Cabin in the Woods has been lurking around unreleased since 2010, frustrating horror fans - taunting them really. After the first release was delayed, reportedly so the film could be converted to 3D, MGM announced that the film would be shelved "indefinitely" due to the studio's financial difficulties. Thanks to Lionsgate this one is finally going to see the light of day in April 2012, and it's about damn time.

Synopsis: Five friends that go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen.  If you think you know this story, think again. The Cabin in the Woods is a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out.

Dark Shadows Poster 2012
Dark Shadows
Release Date: May 11, 2012
Trailer: Not Available

Dark Shadows, set to release in May 2012, is based on the awesome TV series form the 60s, which also had a "revival" for one short season in 1991. What would Tim Burton do with such material, based on vignettes of supernatural terror and doom? We could guess that Johnny Depp would play the lead role (because he always does in Tim Burton movies) and we would be right - to see what else Burton has planned we will have to wait until May... but by all accounts it's going to be great.

Synopsis: In 1752, the Collins family sails from Liverpool, England to North America. The son, Barnabas, grows up to be a wealthy playboy in Collinsport, Maine and is the master of Collinwood Manor. He breaks the heart of a witch, Angelique Bouchard, who turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. In 1972, Barnabas is freed and returns to find his manor in ruin. It is occupied by dysfunctional descendants and other residents, all of whom have secrets

Mothers Day Poster
Mother's Day Remake
Release Date: May 12, 2012
Mother's Day Trailer

The Mother's Day remake release is like reaching out to shake the hand of a guy you know, just to have him rip his hand away at the last second, put it behind his head and yell "Psych!" Darren Lynn Bousman, Director of Saw II - IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera and 11-11-11, directed this remake of the 1980 film, done by the brother of the illustrious Lloyd Kaufman of Troma, and it seems to have released on DVD everywhere on the planet except the United States. Finally, we'll se it here in 2012.

Synopsis: A bank robbery goes wrong and the robbers head for their childhood home, only to discover their mom lost the house to foreclosure. The new owners are having a birthday party, and the brothers take them hostage. When their mother and sister arrive, it becomes clear that the matriarch will do whatever necessary to protect her brood. She is a sadistic and manipulative woman who over the course of the evening takes control of the situation, plots her sons' escape, all at the expense of the hostages.

Prometheus Poster
Prometheus
Release Date:  June 8, 2012
Prometheus Trailer

There has been an enormous amount of buzz and rumor surrounding Prometheus, the Sci-Fi/Horror re-entry of Ridley Scott. Was this originally a prequel to Alien? Did the writer get canned in lieu of another to bring the film to a grander, stand-alone vision? Many of these questions will nevere be answered directly, but if the trailer is any indication this film is going to be friggin' amazing, and we can't wait.

Synopsis: Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Poster
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D
Release Date: June 22, 2011
Trailer: Not Available

There was a pretty awesome mashup novel in 2010 called "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" that told the story of our 16th president in a new way indeed. This has quickly gone to film and is set to release in the Summer of 2012 - and with the production sensibility of Tim Burton added to the mix for crying out loud. I wonder if Johnny Depp is goign to play Honest Abe? In any case, a concept as cool as this has horror fans all a'buzz.

Synopsis: The film explores the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold history that shaped our nation. As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln witnesses the shocking death of his mother, leading him on a path to an ongoing war - and ultimately to the presidency - he chronicles in a hidden diary. The journal reveals the incredible story of a clandestine warrior who never stopped fighting for the country he led and the people he loved.

Leatherface 3d

Leatherface 3D aka The Texsas Chainsaw Massacre
Release Date:  October 5, 2012
Trailer Not Available

Everyone gets excited when a favorite horror villian makes another grand appearance, and Leatherface 3D will swoop in this year to fulfill that need. 3D, of course, has become the filmmaking method of choice of late, so that part we're looking forward to seeing, but also this film reportedly will be an alternate sequel to the original, picking up where the 1974 classic left off. Whether you're expecting big things or preparing for the worst, I know you can't wait for this release.

Synopsis: Twenty years ago the town of Newt, Texas, exacted vengeance on the Sawyer family for their role in assisting and concealing murders committed by the chainsaw-wielding maniac Jeb Sawyer, aka "Leatherface". The entire family was presumed killed when Burt Hartman led the townspeople to burn down their farmhouse, but the Sawyer infant survived and was secretly taken away by two of the vigilante townies, Gavin and Arlene, and raised as their daughter, Heather. It's not until she's in her twenties that Heather learns that she's adopted. A lawyer for her grandmother tracks her down with word she's been left an inheritance.

Angry at her parents for lying to her, she sets out for Texas on a road trip with her boyfriend, Ryan; friends Nikki and Kenny; and Darryl, a hitchhiker they pick up on the way.

Halloween 3D

Halloween 3D

Release Date: October 26, 2012
Trailer Not Available

And... 3D again. The details of this film are very locked down, adding to the anticipation. What we know is that Rob zombie is NOT doing this one, and that is either a negative or a positive, depending on who you talk to. We love Rob Zombie, but many didn't like the direction of his remake of Haloween II - what's going to happen to the franchise under the direction of long-time horror director and editor Patrick Lussier? Oh, the drama indeed - but we do know that Lussier also did the My Bloody Valentine remake and the 3D in that was quite impressive.

World War Z

Release Date: December 21, 2012
Trailer: Not Avialable

World War Z - OMG! The Max Brooks novel, a follow up to his book "The Zombie Survial Guide", has become one of the defacto references for living through the zombie apocalypse and zombie lore. World War Z is still a best seller among zombie fans in spite of the fact it came out 5 years ago, and a film based on this novel is an exciting thing indeed. The success of the drama-laaden AMC series "The Walking Dead" opened the door, me'thinks.

Synopsis: The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen.

The Lords of Salem Poster
The Lords of Salem
Release date: TBA
Trailer Not Available

The Lords of Salem is what Rob Zombie is doing instead of Halloween 3D, and the cast is a complete who's who of genre favorites young and old. Really, I think that the famous Rob Zombie Woolite commercial added a level of mass appeal to the Rob Zombie Style that promises to move this film well into the mainstream... if Zombie plays his cards right. There is a ton of promotion for this film and some crazy posters and images - the buzz will build to a fever pitch until we finally get a release date.

Synopsis: The story is about a local DJ who mistakenly unleashes a hellish curse on the town. 300 years earlier on the very streets of Salem that the townspeople walk on today, innocent folks were rounded up from their homes, convicted of being witches and sentenced to death. The Lords of Salem ran the town with an iron fist, but four witches who were tortured and killed in secrecy vowed that one day they would be back for revenge.

Piranha 3DD Poster

Piranha 3DD (TBD)
Release Date: TBA
Piranha 3DD Trailer

Piranha 3DD is eagerly anticipated after the very successful Piranha 3D from 2010. Nobody really expected much from that one, but it wasn't half bad... and the 3D was really good. Now, there needs to be another one, and horror freaks are itching for it. Mindless? Of course, but we'll go and see it anyway in spite of our proclamations that we want more important and quality horror in our lives. I wonder how this one will be without the influence of Alexandre Aja, who did the first one as well as High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes remake and P2... Hell, that's why it's anticipated!

Synopsis: Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Though they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being…but can they be stopped?
