In 2012 horror fans received a surprise gift with the popular ghost story Insidious. The movie did well at the box office and as we predicted last year there will be a sequel to the movie Insidious 2. With the picture’s reported $1.5 million budget, it has led to the film being called the most profitable film of 2011.
The horror movie will continue as the creative team behind the film announce plans for a sequel to Insidious. Leigh Whannell will once again write the script, and James Wan is in talks to once again direct.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired the U.S. rights, FilmDistrict will distribute the film in the United States.
The Insidious sequel will go into production in 2012 for a 2013 release. Wan and Whannell are currently keeping the plot of the sequel under wraps.
"Insidious was the most fun project I've ever worked on,” said Whannell. “From start to finish it was an absolute joy—from the writing of the screenplay, all the way to the first screening of the film at the Toronto Film Festival. I believe that James Wan and I achieved what we set out to do—create a horror film for horror fans. So it is with great excitement that we announce our commitment to a second installment of this story. Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film. Thank you so much to every fan—you are the reason why we do what we do. See you in The Further.”
