Czar, I love the site and everything, but I hate intrusive advertising. Could you please kill the rollover ads? I can live with banners that you have to click on to activate, but rollover ads are a complete pain in the ass, especially when there's a rollover menu bar right below them. I don't know if you can exclude them from the rotation or not, but it would be really nice if you could Frown

Let me look into that and see what can be done. The big challenge is that it is ads that pay for the hosting, bandwidth, developers, technical support, etc. that I can't do myself... and that crap is expensive considering we get 10k visitors a day between The Ossuary and BHM... so I need to balance usability with a strong desire to keep the lights on around here.

Is there a particular ad that is causing you trouble?

Yeah, the Brutal Massacre one in the forums is acting up. I just did a little experimenting with it and it turns out it may just be my browser or something, although I don't know for sure. The reason I complained was that it was popping up every time I posted something here. I assumed that was because my mouse happened to be positioned over it when the page loaded, but now that I think about it, that's kind of improbable since the Submit button is low on the page. On the other hand, if I try to manually activate it by rolling my mouse over it, it only pops up when I roll over the lower left corner of the ad, which is right in line vertically with the Submit button. It's as if the page is loading from the bottom up or something, moving under my mouse as it loads.

---------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I understand you need to have the ads in order to stay open. I'm not complaining about advertising per se. It's just that I can't stand uninvited pop-ups that insert themselves between me and the screen like some self-important idiot dancing in a movie theater. So if there's a way to avoid them (but only if there's a way) I'd rather be able to do that. Cheers! Wink

I agree 100%. I wanted to ask about that. I wasn't sure if there was anything that could be done about it.

You could always try my way.  I open the site in Firefox and have a firewall that has a tendency to pummel rollover ads into submission.  Thus, I barely see ANY ads on here.  But I do know how annoying they can be because one on either this site or imdb was ticking me off (for Alone in the Dark the game), it takes up the whole screen so you cant not click on it.  lol

Those adds are annoying.

I'm not a big fan of Firefox, cryptic. Plus, my Flash plugin isn't working in it now for some reason, so I really can't use it at the moment. Opera and Flock both do a good job with pop-ups and stuff, but I'll have to check whether they can beat up on rollovers as well.

That is a valid point.  Had forgotten about that.  I have a nifty add-on that'll take a slideshow or a multipage article and turn it into one long page, but it doesnt work in 3.0, so I kinda know that feeling.  But yeah, try the others and let me know how they go.

I like some of the rollover ads. Like that one for "Pathology" where it says "slice banner open" and you get a nice blood spurt!
