I don't quite know how the greeting button works on the profiles. Everyday now I have had a greeting from a 'Visitor', but I can't do anything but delete it. Is there any more to this button? What does it do exactly?

Yeah, can someone please answer this?  I've stopped opening that screen because it was always the same thing.

Very good question, and part of my current heartburn...

Greetings, when they are working properly, are supposed to be a way to say a quick "Hi, I like your profile" from one logged in member to another. I think even when they are working properly they are kind of lame.

Currently greetings make it possible for an un-logged in person who sees your profile to also say "Hi, I like your profile"... trouble is you have no idea who that person is because they aren't logged in. They could be a member, they could be a lurker.

What I am TRYING to do is turn them off completely. If you are logged in and want to say "HI" to someone then you can go to their profile and write a letter which is an interactive email, or chat which is the IM system... "greetings" seem to me to be pointless. I am unfortunately having some coding problems with this feature that is making it difficult for me to remove this "OK idea that didn't work out". I'm not nearly technical enough at this point... but... I'm working on it and soon greetings will be gone forever.

Well first off some of the profiles you can't send them a letter. Second if you sent a person a letter every time you wanted to just say hi would that person think you were being a pest? I myself like the greeting. I sent the person here that posts all the cool pictures a letter because I was concerned that they had not been here for awhile, they have yet to reply etc, that lead me to believe I had bothered them. I think the greetings should stay.

That is some good feedback FreakyCreepieChic.  If I can make it so that you must log in to use greetings, would that be a good alternative? That way you can't respond to them directly, but at least you know exactly who is sending them to you.

I was just at your profile and I see the block that has your last several forum posts - can you not see that? I also see comments under your friends list from others... the only postings that will show up on your profile are forum posts and your latest blog entries... other things such as direct comments on people's profiles and blogs and such will not also show on your own profile..

Let me know if I'm missing anything...

Oh, and one other thing about this... There are two places to post pictures. "Profile Pictures" that you get to from "My PIx" while looking at your own profile are pictures that only show on your profile... those cannot be commented on and can only be seen directly by viewing your profile. The other is "Photos" which is the photo share found in the navigation bar that runs horizontally across every page (The Ossuary Homr, BHM Home, Members, Forums, Blogs... etc) If you upload from the main "Photos" area these are for general sharing - they come up on photo searches and folks can comment on them.

So... if you have pics that you want to be in the site-wide photo share that have comments and populate your photo gallery use the "Photos" from the navigation menu... once you click on that you will see how to upload.

Sorry if this is confusing...

The picture over on the left side of the page, like on this page where your picture and name is and under it says 51 posts. I have posted things but yet never says I have. I like the greetings. I think we should have them and it should say who they are from. I like everyone here and I would like them to know they are thought of. Think of me as the Stalker Mom! I am sorry if I have bothered anyone here. I think of us all as a big family in Horror.

Oh, now I see...  I'm not sure why that's happening.  Let me look into that!!

And, I can't imagine that you bother anyone - I for one LOVE the fact that you are a part of this community and that you're so interested in everyone feeling welcome - every good Ossuary needs a Stalker Mom!!!

Amen, I think it's cool myself. You have an opinion on just about everything and I like that. I have a good feeling that your attentiveness will make you one of the few survivors of the coming zombie invasion.

Anyone know why she's gone?  Is this an attempt to fix the post glitch?  I'm just curious.

It could be anybody who likes you or your profile. They are working on it. I have sent you a greeting because I like your profile.

Yes, that's right... as of now there are some places where people who are not logged in can do greetings.  If someone sends a greeting while they are logged in then it will say who it's from, but if they are not it says "Visitor".

I am working on removing the places where visitors can do greetings. We have all decided to leave the greetings in place, but make it so that you must be logged in to use them so we don't get a million "Visitor" greeting messages... they are silly.

I get a greeting from a visitor every night at around 1:05 AM and this has happened since I started around two weeks ago. I really think it is some sort of system glitch as I doubt that a visitor sends me a greeting every night during the witching hour of the night, as flattering and creepy as that thought is. I even stayed online one night around that time to see if anyone attempted to reach me through IM and it was a no go. Any chance that it is a glitch? Also, I am with FreakyCreepieChic on keeping the greeting feature, but I also agree that it would be a good idea to limit it to folks that are logged in.

Argh!

Okay, the greetings thing is DRIVING ME CRAZY!!  I'm really sorry that it's been a pain to have random visitors to the site who are not logged in send those things - it's lame to get a greeting from a stranger where there is no way to know who they are or how to respond...

I'm working on fixing this still - I've hired a software developer to help me with this and some other random things around the site, so rest assured that this and other things that might make you nuts are being worked on. My goal is to have The Ossuary be the best place on earth for horror talk and such... and we're gonna get there - promise!!

Okay, I think the greeting thing is fixed. If some of you want to give me some feedback - tell me if you continue to get "visitor" greetings or (hopefully) not... and also make sure that if you are logged in and go to someone's profile you have the option to send them a greeting. Please keep in mind that the "actions menu" does not show to you while you are looking at your own profile... only when you are looking at someone elses profile... and only when you are logged in.

Well, yes.  You know how you always kind of fantasize about having somebody leave you flowers on your car or send you annonymous love notes, etc...(at least most women do from time to time) but in highschool I had a stalker that got way out of hand with this type o' thing. I cut ties before things got to a truly violent or scary level, but his obsessive behavior was disconcerting to say the least and it gave me pause... Here's just a taste...we were just friends at this point, before things got way too weird and one day (this is when I was like 17 and he had just turned 18) and we were having a conversation about politics...Even though he was 18, he wasn't going to bother to vote in the presidential election. I bawled him out and told him that I thought that would be terribly irresponsible and that he should 'grow up'.

I kid you not, the very next day, he called me to tell me that he joined the Navy for a 6 year stint that very morning...I was like "What the...?"...He told me that he did it to prove to me that he was 'grown up' and now demanded that we should take our 'relationship' to the 'next level'.

When I told him that I had no interest in that, that he knew that very thing cause it had come up several times before, he kind of went crazy...cause I had "MADE HIM" join the navy.

Once he was shipped out, he would do things like send me cute stuffed animals with the heads cut off...or a dozen rotten and bug infested roses...then the next day, a love letter would come...then the next angry phone calls...

Anyhow...it's been nearly 20 years since I last saw him, but he's kind of like a bad penny...he turns up every once in a while...either he sends me a letter or gets my email or finds out where I am working... I can't even contact old mutual friends for fear he will turn up again.

Its a hassle.  But, it never escalated into something terribly threatening...but it might have...I suppose it still could.
