We've got 4 primary versions of "Invasion" - unless I'm forgetting something... and if I am I have no doubt this will be corrected. Anyway, we've got:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Don Siegel - Director

Kevin McCarthy ... Dr. Miles J. Bennell

Dana Wynter ... Becky Driscoll

Larry Gates ... Dr. Dan 'Danny' Kauffman

King Donovan ... Jack Belicec

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Philip Kaufman - Director

Donald Sutherland ... Matthew Bennell

Brooke Adams ... Elizabeth Driscoll

Jeff Goldblum ... Jack Bellicec

Veronica Cartwright ... Nancy Bellicec

Body Snatchers (1993)

Abel Ferrara - Director

Gabrielle Anwar ... Marti Malone

Terry Kinney ... Steve Malone

Billy Wirth ... Tim Young

Christine Elise ... Jenn Platt

The Invasion (2007)

Oliver Hirschbiegel - Director

Nicole Kidman ... Carol Bennell

Daniel Craig ... Ben Driscoll

Jeremy Northam ... Tucker Kaufman

Jackson Bond ... Oliver

Which one of these is the best, and which the worst? I personally like the Donald Sutherland version best - and prefer the stinky 90s version with Meg Tilly to the preachy Nicole Kidman one from last year...

Yeah - I should have also noted that the first one is absolutely great.  I think my fav is the DS one because that was the first one I saw... kind of like my favorite Bond is Roger Moore for the same reason.

I know, right? I think I'm the only one left that likes him best. Not to say I don't like the others... the new guy and the torture scene was Definitely horrifying.

I never realized the characters have different names in each version. That's pretty cool! Not sure why exactly, but it is.

Anyway, I'll go with the 1978 version for a thousand, Alex. I didn't see the '90's one that I can recall, but I did see the newest one and it's completely deserving of its 19% Rotten Tomatoes score.

I've only seen the first two, and I think they're both great. The 1978 version is my favorite. It's got great acting and really cool special effects. It's got a great cliff-hanger ending, too.

Jeff Goldblum and Evil Leonard Nimoy FTW!

Seen em all. First One the best. Always will be.  1978 one a decent remake but there's something about black and white scifi that I just love. For a good book on the subject (doesn't include the new one), read "They're Here" Invasion of the Body Snatchers: A Tribute. It's edited by Kevin McCarthy of the original and has essays from top writers such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz etc on the 1956, 1978 & 1993 versions. Very informative.

Personally I think the first one is the best. It was filmed during the Red Scare when artists in the film industry were being blacklisted for being suspected as "commies". It was a huge issue that no one could publicly speak about without fear of being persecuted. I think a lot of really good sci-fi came out of this period because people were finding a way to slip political commentary under the radar and address people's fears without risk of exposure. The fun thing about watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers is that you can look at it in two ways: the pod people are the communists, infecting good American people's lives in the dead of night and turning them into mindless zombies, or the pod people are the all the legislators and Americans who got caught up in the frenzy, blindly following hate speech and infecting the good American people who just wanted to the freedom to live as unique individuals.

I saw the most recent Invasion and it was ok as a sci-fi/horror flick but something just felt missing because it didn't have that relevant underlying real-world panic that was ever-present in the original. Maybe you could make a case to fit some of today's current events to the intent but I think it would have to be a stretch.

I love it when Leonard Nimoy is evil!
