The convo that I had with Nick about Homecoming in the worst horror movies thread got me thinking:

We all know that elsewhere on BHM are the fantastic reviews done by Zombie Master Lee Roberts of all 26 eps of Masters of Horror.  However, I've heard such mixed opinions that I'm curious what your opinions are.  What are your favorite eps?  What eps did you hate?  What were you on the fence about?  Do you have any thoughts on the show as a whole?  Spill it!

My thoughts:

Season One:  I liked every ep, even the decidedly non-horror Homecoming, (because I started to get the feeling (seeing them all after air on dvd) that they were basically using "horror" as a very loose term).  My favorites in Season One:  Incident on and off a mountain road, Dreams in the witch house, Imprint, Sick Girl.  On the fence:  It took a lot for me to get into Cigarette Burns for some reason (I think itwas the dialogue).  Also, I REALLY didnt like Deer Woman the first time I saw it, but I've gotten more into it as time goes on.  Chocolate and Pick Me Up were also weird because I liked them when I first saw them but I like, mentally told myself I didn't.

Season Two:  I'm not naive enough to say the quality didnt go down.  I own all of season one on individual dvds.  Not all of Season two.  Favorites:  Right to Die, Sounds Like, Pelts.  Least favorites (and the only ones I don't own):  Pro-Life (I'm sorry Carpenter, but giving an abortionist an abortion is a line that shouldnt be crossed...and that adult demon was just sad), The Damned Thing (Ted Raimi was great....but that ENDING.  THAT ENDING....), and Dream Cruise (One of the three worst movies I've ever seen).

Overall:  I tend to think I was more generous because, while it was on premium cable, I always thought that the one-hour time frame and the fact that it was still a tv show gave them less freedom than a full-length movie (look at Jenifer and Imprint.  Thats what happens when its a tv show even though its pay cable).

Incident on and off a Mountain Road was easily my favorite and one of the few times I felt like I was watching a movie and not a TV show.

Ok i admit, my opinion cant really be taken for much cuz ive only seen like 4 of them (cig. burns, on&off mount. road, chocolate, dreams in witch house) but i feel like voicing my opinion anyway!

My fav was DEFINLY Dreams in the Witch House!  Maybe its a huge Lovecraft (ditto w/ Stuart Gordon) fan but i doubt that even if i did watch the others that any of them could beat this for me.  There were a few parts that maybe were a little cheesy but overall it was just awesome.

I liked Cigarette Burns alot too.  I think a lot of the reason that I enjoyed it is because I love stories where the characters are searching for something obscure w/ some legend or myth attached (kinda like the ninth gate or 8mm or The Divinci Code...not great movies but i love the story of the search)

Chocolate kinda bored me.

And im sorry but i really didnt see the big deal about Incident On and Off a Mountain Road.  I love Coscarelli and there was a definitly creepy/freaky factor that some of the other films didnt have but it just kinda fell short for me.  I hate to admit it but i kinda feel like I would of enjoyed it more if it had been made in the 80's!  I feel like the whole chick turns macgyver woulda fit in better to a movie made in that era.  hah is that bad?

I have to see the rest, i just picked up these cuz they were onsale @ blockbuster and i needed to choose 2 more dvds to get the 4/$10 deal!

That was how I first saw them.  Blockbuster stopped after they got a hold of Pick Me Up/Homecoming Double Feature.  Luckily I had a Hollywood video that rented them all!  Don't feel bad about posting, I wanted everyones opinion, no matter how much you've seen of them.  Dreams was the first one I saw too as a result.  That one REALLY messed me up.  I showed it to like three other groups of people.  Maybe it was the rat, maybe it was the intensity of the scene with the witch and the baby.  But wow...what an ep.

Chocolates kinda an acquired taste.  It took me a REALLY long time after I saw it to appreciate it so I definitely understand thinking it was boring.

I think my biggest issue with Incident was that secondary twist.  It wouldve been fine if she just got into the car...but the trunk...that kinda confused me a touch.  I mean I get it.  I know what they're saying...but....just seemed out of place.  It just wasnt enough to kill it for me.

Favorites: Season One = Cigarette Burns, Imprint, Incident... , and Dreams...

Season Two = The Black Cat, Pelts, and Family

Worst: Season One = Homecoming, Haeckels Tale

Season Two = The Washingtonians, The Damned Thing, The Screwfly Solution, We Scream for Ice Cream.

Season one was so much more superior to season two it is almost laughable.

Also I think Pick Me Up from season one would also be a great concept for a full length film.

I thought that both seasons were awesome. Some episodes, not so much. But episodes like "The Fair Haired Child" or "Imprint" were perfect.

Crypticpsych, you're totally right about William Malone. Feardotcom was a joke, so I totally agree with you about "The Fair Haired Child" redeeming him.

Part of me wants to rewatch Pro-Life because I think I went in prejudiced...and because Perlman was so awesome in it....and part of me thinks I got it right the first time.  We shall see at some point.
