My friend and I have decided we want to rewatch as much 1970's horror as possible. I don't own a lot of horror from the 1970's so I obviously have to go find them somewhere else. My problem here is where do I start? Off the top of my head I can only think of a few to look for. I need some recommendations...desperately

Rewatching 1970's horror
- Message
you could go chronologically (how it is said? english its not my language) and start with 1971's "let's scare jessica to death" i don't know if others but i loved it (but i don't think a dvd exists, i only got it on vcr), then there's always the great slashers "black christmas", "halloween" , "texas chainsaw massacre" (the first ones, a must rewatch!) almost forgot! there's also "suspiria" argento's masterpiece from the 70s, obviously you can't miss george A. romero's dawn of the dead, start from there, rewatch it always get me nostalgic and in the mood for the other 70s classics like "burnt offerings" (1976) based on Robert marasco's novel (great book also & creepy movie). hope this helps. see you when you sleep.
Seventies were a great time for Horror. In addition to the great stuff that Lestat mentioned, there's the anthology movies like Asylum and Tales from the Crypt. Hammer was still turning out Chris Lee Dracula movies. Price was doing Dr. Phibes and Theatre of Blood. Warhol did his thing with Dracula and Frankenstein. Cronenberg did Rapid and Shivers. There were the original versions of The Stepford Wives, The Omen and Willard. There was Donald Sutherland in Don't Look Now and a great remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Let's not forget Blacula and my favorite "Laugh at me if you want to, but I still like it movie": Night of the Lepus. This can get you started anyway. Good luck on your quest Molly.
The Exorcist (1972), Carrie (1976), original When a Stranger Calls (1979), Last House on the Left (1972), original Hills Have Eyes (1977), I Spit on Your Grave (1978, MASSIVELY controversial), Cronenberg's The Brood (1978), It's Alive (1974), original The Amityville Horror (1979), original The Wicker Man (1973...a crazy trippy personal favorite), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Deep Red/Profondo Rosso (1970 and 1976, to go with Suspiria), Rocky Horror Picture Show (sorta...1975), Alien (1979),
And...above all....my personal favorite....and horror depending on your personal definition....A Clockwork Orange (1971). It may not be "horror" horror, but it's one of the most disturbing, craziest movies I've ever seen.
And Kolchak was on TV!
Don't forget "Frogs," a camp classic if there ever was one. As a kid, I watched it on the Late Show and it scared the hell out of me (not all of it; some of the deaths are laughably stupid, even for a kid). As an adult, I caught a showing of it and just rolled my eyes. But each time I enjoyed it. As for Kolchak, the two movies were good, and the first ten or so episodes of the series. After that, even at the time I thought it descended into the ridiculous with its Cobbled-Together-Monster-of-the-Week format.
Dracula (1979) with Frank Langella, The Omen (1976), Phantasm (1979), Trilogy of terror (1975) especially the story with the Zuni fetish doll, The sentinel (1976), Salem's Lot (1979) with David Soul, It's Alive (1974), Who can kill a child? (1978), The night of the sorcerers (1973), and I hope I can remember some more.
I'm a bit late with this post but what the fuck I always liked the original When a Stranger Calls (1979) although pedants will argue it doesnt qualify. Fuck em. It's a good movie.

I could watch these faster, but I have limited time on my hands with school in session and I have an appetite for Shoalin Soccer and Wes Anderson and old episodes of The Tick DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU from giving me some awesome titles to look up
unitl next time ...SPOON!
Heheh...nice.
Um...Vault of Horror from the early 70s couldnt hurt. Careful on Vault though. We don't have a version that doesn't have half the gore cut and replaced with still frames. The version that's been released is one of those double feature dvds....with Tales from the Crypt actually, which is how you'll find that.
The reason you can't find Willard on dvd is because the original...ISNT on dvd. lol Deep Red, I recommend Blue Underground or Lions Gate (the company who released it before it reverted back to Blue Underground for a two-disc version)
Asylum: http://www.amazon.com/Asylum-Peter-Cushing/dp/B000FC2GFK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1223417508&sr=8-2 You should also be able to find it in the horrorshop.
Also: And Now the Screaming Starts from 1973. Amicus is a good company for horror back then. They did Tales, Vault, Asylum, and this. They also did House that Dripped Blood in 71.
Damn, i hit reply w/ a long list in my head but now im realizing that they're all more like 68-69 or 80-81!
So instead here's a nice website w/ a list of only horror films made in 1970's! hah lets see you add THAT to your netflix queue!
Bump Suspiria and Phantasm up on that list.
Also, if you to see some lesser known horror movies watch Driller Killer(when I think of 70's horror I just picture the begining of this movie when Abel Ferrara is in the taxi...he looks like a john travolta!).
Also The Abominable Dr. Phibes, the original Amityville Horror, Black Christmas(orig), Bay of Blood, The Brood, Shivers, Martin(a lot of great Romero flicks get pushed to the side!)
Theres more but im sure u dont wanna watch 70's horror forever....dont forget the 80's or the creature features and scifi of the 50's and 60's!
General advice, go to that website or go to imdb and look up movies by Mario Bava, Argento, Romero, and even Fulci although most of his movies people like the most are from the 80's.
Cheers!

There are plenty more I'm sure, these are just the ones from my collection. Some are better than others but I think they are all worth a watch especially if you're embarking on a tour de force of 1970's horror.
I agree, Let's Scare Jessica to Death is still one of my all time favorites. Some more to watch from that era:
Bad Ronald
Burnt Offerings
Trilogy of Terror
Warlock Moon
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen
Audrey Rose
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud
Phantasm
