It seems as if the zombie genre is locked up by Romero's standards, and zombie movies that don't follow that formula are not following the rules. With this in mind what could the next genre-shaking zombie rendition be?

The Next Original Zombie Scenario

I tend to disagree. While Romero is the patriarch of the modern zombie film, he only set the basics down, not a complete formula. Evil Dead, Zombi 2, The Return of the Living Dead series, and others prove that you can keep the basics and deviate from the "Romero Formula" and still have a good zombie film.
I am looking forward to the release of "Worst Case Scenario". The trailer can be found on the "topic" by that title and it looks very original.
I saw that trailer too - it's hard to make out exactly what's going on, but the Nazi zombie connection is clear, and the production quality looks phenomenal. I'm looking forward to seeing that one too.
WOW...That sure looks interesting... What's scarier than Nazis? Zombies are. What's scarier than Zombies? Nazis Zombies are... BRILLIANT!
The Romero Zombie gave us a way to kill the undead, Kill the brain, kill the zombie. Dan O'Bannon, however, gave us zombies that couldn't be killed in any way that wouldn't re-infect other's...In Return of the Living Dead, we saw zombies that couldn't be killed by head trauma and they could not be disposed of by burning as the smoke and ash would reinfect the rest of the population. As terrifying as Romero's vision is, this zombie plague is worse...there would be no way to ride the planet of them, until they just fully decomposed...but EVEN THEN...it is possible that their microscopic remains would reinfect the soil and microorganisms themselves.
This idea hasn't really been fully explored, in my opinion, apart from the Return of the Living Dead series. Most likely cause Romero's vision allows for hope to flurish...It's not as fatalistic as the idea of zombies that can never die.
Zombie apes
Zombie monkeys
fanged, taloned, with scraps of flesh peeling and hanging from their bodies as they screeching swing down and grab you pulling you up into the trees where a whole family of them starts to dismember and feed upon you
good times
While they weren't technically zombies, the rabid humans in 28 Days Later were the best version yet. They were feral and they were fast. The Romero-style slow, lumbering zombies just aren't that scary. They're not that hard to outrun, unless you manage to get yourself cornered.
.
Once I get done with my current screenplay, I've got a zombie story I want to do. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but I will say I'm going back to the zombies' roots...
How bout this. A zombie breakout at a Major League Baseball game. All of a sudden a fan turns around and everyone in the stands are lifeless, drooling, unemotional, braindead monsters. Oh wait. . . . . shit they're just Brewers fans. Never mind folks.
If anyone gets a chance please check out the channel 4 website (British) for there Zombie Drama that has just been aired
if you google in "Dead Set" it should come up quite quickly
It is really good for a TV drama, lots of gore, good script amd a few good jump scenes.
It also has an ending that i thing the great george would like
