So I know this has probably been brought up somewhere else on the forums but I just saw The Cursed with Christina Ricci and thought it was a great werewolf film. It definetely lacked on the creepiness and gore factor but I just thought that it was a well made film overall. Dont ask me why I watched it, it started with Shutter, The Ruins, and High Tension (and if you read this Madmolly I entirely agree, High Tension was HORRIBLE). Maybe it was that Joshua Jackson was in Shutter and The Cursed but whatever. So anyways I was wondering what everyone thought was the best Werewolf movie that has been made. I have heard great things about Gingersnaps and how great it was but I am looking for other suggestions for werewolf movies because I have not seen very many for some odd reason. I am looking for more recently made werewolf movies btw because I am looking for an insane one that will scare the crap out of me, or at least try. I have also never seen Gingersnaps but I will soon, I promise. Please help my fellow horror adicts.

Werewolves

I'd have to go with Underworld, I guess. I'm not a big fan of werewolves, but I thought they were pretty well done in that film.
An American Werewolf in London. It won't scare the crap out of you but it is very well done and a little bit nuts.
I also am quite fond of "Silver Bullet" and "The Wolfen"
I just read this thread and I'm glad someone agrees with me about high tension. Come to think of it I can't think of a lot of good werewolf movies. Underworld isn't scary so I dunno if I would count that one. I always forget the names of movies but I did see one a bit ago. It was a werewolf movie that took place in colonial america...kind of interesting, but alas i don't remember the title sorry

I can't think of any especially good werewolf movies either. I suspect that's because there really aren't any. The best one I can come up with that hasn't already been mentioned is Wolf, and that's just because I like Jack Nicholson (in fact, I would say skip that movie unless you're pretty fond of 'ole Jack). I also liked an American Werewolf in Paris but it should be viewed as more of a screwball comedy rather than a horror movie.
Ugh--Underworld. It was nothing but a cheap horror knockoff of The Matrix. There were some elements that I really liked but Underworld I and II struck me as being contrived and kind of crummy overall.

I total agree about American Werewolf! I loved it!
Peltablo, while it's true I did like Underworld more than most people do, I wasn't endorsing the whole movie here. I just said I thought the treatment of werewolves in it was pretty well done.
.
For the record, though, I consider Underworld a near-miss. It came close to being a great movie, but missed in the end. Underworld II, on the other hand, was a complete travesty.
Hey don't forget Petalbo and Pastor...coming January 23, 2009....UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS! Sounds like they're really going werewolf this time. It's going to be directed by the special effects guy from the first two, Patrick Tatopolous.
I've been impatiently awaiting Universal's remake of The Wolfman. It's got a solid cast including Benecio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. I saw a bootleg trailer of it from Comic-Con and it looks like it's going to be very good. It's got an 85 million dollar budget and the production values look as gorgeous as Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1992. The movie comes out April 3, 2009 if anyone is interested.
I actually just watched Underworld again today because it was on tv, I was never a big fan of this movie but I agree that some of the effects were well done. I've seen quite a few werefolf movies but it sounds like the general concensus is that there are not many good werewolf movies if at all which were my thoughts from the start. I don't know why I thought cursed was so great, maybe it's because I've thought that Christina Ricci has been hot ever since casper. But if any new ones come out that you think I should see please let me know. Also, totally off topic, I saw a great funny horror movie with the kid from idle hands called the devil's den, absolutely hilarious. Go Spanish Fly!!!
I loved Under World. I loved the whole concept of the movie. I love Werewolf movies.
I love you, FreakyCreepieChick. Not afraid to stand up and be counted. That's the shit right there. You go, girl
Pastor of Muppets: I can agree with that. There were so many things, especially in the first movie (it had the best jumping-off-building-and-coolly-landing scene I've ever seen), that they did right--it just didn't work out some how. The werewolf effects and werewolf/vampire culture story line were pretty good.
Cryptipsych: "Rise of the Lycans" sounds just awful enough that I will almost certainly rush right out and see as soon as it's available. *whine*
DoctorLoomis: Wolfman sounds like it has a lot of potential. It may turn out to be the best Werewolf movie ever just because there don't seem to be a lot of contenders. There needs to be a "Bram Stoker's Dracula" equivalent for the werewolf movie genre.
Unscareable: Well yeah, Cursed was pretty good, and Christina Ricci is totally hot (but then I thought the same thing about Winona Ryder back in the day, so my taste is perhaps suspect).

Um...they still pretty much are. Or am I in the minority on that.....
I'd have to agree with you on that one cryptic, she looked bangin in Mr. Deeds.

Ricci was a shmokin babe when she weighed more than a handful of peanuts
American Werewolf for sure.
"Have you ever talked to a corpse? It's boring!"
Dog Soldiers is pretty sweet too.
i thought dog soldiers was a prity good werewolf movie that was pritymuch the only good one

Just thought I'd note, the movie you're thinking of is probably Ginger Snaps : The Beginning.
Watch all of the ginger snaps movies if you like the first one, they're fantastic.
Also watch out for the wolf man.. coming to theatres this april.. the cast looks excellent. :D

There aren't many good Werewolf movies out there. The Howling ( 1980. If you've seen it stop looking for other werewolf movies. I believe they must've used real ones.), Dog Soldiers and maybe Metal Beast. I'm a big Werewolf fan and all though I like the Underworld movies 1) nobody could consider them horror and 2) the Lycans look
like cats. The American Werewolf in London looks like a Badger. I hope there is someone else on this site that thinks that movie borderline sucks besides me. A company of Wolves sucks too. Most recently Big Bad Wolf sucks, Blood and Chocolate isn't very good, I didn't really care for Cursed ( liked Shutter, though ) and Gingersnaps...well..I like W-E-R-E-W-O-L-V-E-S. So if you're in it for the werewolf you probably won't care too much for it.
I never liked American Werewolf. Borderline sucks is a good description of how I feel about it, and on a cranky day you can do away with the "borderline."
I loved Ginger Snaps. I was in it for the werewolves at first, but I ended up being in it for Ginger. Mmmm. Ginger.
I love American Werewolf in London.
1. Started off traditional with the pub and the warnings and the attack on the moor--well done.
2. the originality of the werewolf being haunted by the ghosts of his victims.
3. some very funny dialogue--enough to send it into the realm of dark comedy
4. a very well done werewolf for it's time
5. nurse sex
6.great use of the song, "Blue Moon"
7. the guy being pursued in the subway was a good suspenseful scene
I also love: Dog Soldiers--easily the best werewolf movie in quite some time
and Silver Bullet--Gary Busey is worth the ticket alone and the shredding of the girl in the bedroom is great and yes I know the fog is cheesy, but so is mine. And what's not to like about a one-eyed werewolf preacher (he should get his own comic book)
and Wolfen--very underated but I must add--the book is excellent. Like far more gory and nasty than the film.
There have been plenty of bad werewolf films made.
PS: I even liked Teen Wolf the first 25 times I saw it. I think it came on old HBO twice every day for like 5 years or something.
I gotta jump in here. You will not find a scary werewolf movie. You'll find plenty with a good story and good special effects, but none have been that scary. My opinion, the best:
THE HOWLING

Teen Wolf, eh? I'm sure you've heard of "the scene."

I think that's because, in the end, the protagonist is just a wolf and wolves aren't all that scary. It sucks to be killed by one, no doubt, but they're not scary the way a shambling dead human with his skin falling off is scary.
The original Wolfman movies were more classical in tone than recent ones. They had more to do with feeling pity for the infected guy. The horror you feel at his killings stems from your horror at what he's been reduced to rather than at the actual blood and guts. That's why I think most of the modern versions, while being in some ways more "realistic," aren't really that effective as horror movies.
American Werewolf tried to maintain that old feeling of empathy for the wolf-man, but killed it with the comedy, imo. Ginger Snaps did it more effectively.
okay i dont have anything to suggest because i was going to suggest Ginger Snaps even before reading the whole thing i am a film maker so i am just going to through this idea out here and see if you guys like it, if so then i will start working on it, as soon as i am done my zombie script. if not i will work on it later.., but i saw the Fly, and Videodrome and Shivers, not werewolves movies i know but the director of those films created something magical called Body Horror and i think that the next werewolf film needs to a body horror film. i think that would be amazing and i want to do it one day, werewolf films in general have always disapointed me because i love the creature and the idea of the werewolf so much and they are used as foils for Edward Cullen... WTF honestly the bastardization of the werewolf burns the shit out of the me.
oh yeah i have to say this now that i think about it, there is a movie called Wolf which i loved, and then there is another movie called "the howling" i think also good, but other than that and the ginger snaps sequeals (#3 kicks so much ass) they all do, great movies, i love Canada!
oh yeah someone said "A company of wolves" sucked, it does not, it is a great movie, i love that one, but it is not what i would discribe as a werewolf movie nor a horror movie, that would be more of an artistic film, very good but not actually a werewolf horror movie, although it does tell with werewolves and horror.
One that everyone always forgets about is Bad Moon. Well done, hideously underrated hwerewolf movie. Also, there is Company Of Wolves, which is an interesting take on the little red riding hood story.
On a side note, Im currently writing a screenplay, called Through A Wolf's Eye, which is a dramatic, Anne Rice type take on the werewolf legend. I have big aspirations for it!
I love the werewolf tale in general, prefer it in literature than in film, 8 times out of 10 it comes off tacky. I find the idea of burden and uncontrollable transformation to be rich components of a horror tale. Thought Underworld was pretty bad, someone mentioned a Matrix rip-off which I hadn't thought of, I always thought it as a cheesy Romeo and Juliet story. Landis' American Werewolf in London is a classic though, great beginning and ending if you ask me. I did see trailers for The Wolfman when I saw Zombieland and yeah that looks interesting. As far as recommendations I think everyone here has covered everything, maybe The Howling? Steer clear of the sequels, they were pretty bad, but the first one I thought was fairly original, still may not be your thing.
i would say the ones i've seen aren't horror movies, except Howling. i find the transformation the most intriguing part of werewolf movies and usually base my likes and dislikes on how the fx are done to accomplish this. Howlings are decent, American Werewolf in London I consider really good for the era, and the digital ones in Underworld are good, very fluid and smooth.
Dog Soldiers
My favorite has got to be Silver Bullet for sure. I also liked Howling, American werewolf and Bad Moon as well.
Im in the process of writing my own wolf story now called Through A wolf's eye which takes on more of a Anne Rice/Dramatic and Historical wolf story. I have high hopes for it!
I love
Blood and Chocolate
It's not scary just like the werewolves..
