Scream either that or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. Scream spawned some of the worst films ever and showed that Wes Craven had finally lost all credibility. And TCM remake was an abomination.

Scream?!?  The sequels were bad but the first one was a great homage to the genre.

I was asked my opinion and I gave it. I thought it was a hot steaming turd fest and I wished it was never made. I'm glad you liked it. That is your right. I saw it when it first came out and wanted to throw shit at the screen.

It's funny. When you get into talking about the worst ever, everyone's first instinct is to try to call up from memory a movie they hated. But the reality is, even that movie isn't as awful as the ones you've forgotten. Why did you forget them, after all? Because they really were awful. I say that because I have a couple of those cheapo movie-pak collections from Best Buy with 100 "Chilling Classics," and most of them are crap that is so bad it makes whatever we come up with off the top of our heads look like the Godfather. Ever seen Oasis of the Zombies? Memorial Valley Massacre? The Revenge of Dr. X? No? You should, before playing this game.

.

I mean, I pretty much hated Nightmare on Elm Street, but there's no way I could ever say it was a worse movie than Oasis of the Zombies. Likewise with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. I'm no fan by a longshot, but it's certainly a better movie than Horrors of Spider Island.

.

I don't want to step on any toes here--lots of people haven't seen any older or more obscure movies, and there's no crime in that--but if we're gonna talk bad, let's talk really bad!

.

I nominate I Eat Your Skin. I don't know if it's the absolute worst or not, but it's really, really bad.

Oh what a horrible...horrible...boring...derivative....horrible...boring movie Feardotcom is.  It's also VERY unlikely.  I don't mean your usual horror unlikely, I mean scientifically, its VERY rare to near impossible for a woman to be hemophiliac....yet thats integral to the movie.  I honestly cannot remember anything at all about the movie and I wish I'd never seen it.

In full perspective, three movies make the worst horror movies I've ever seen list:

1) Wicked Lake

2) Masters of Horror:  Dream Cruise (the dvd is like an hour and a half long, so it counts.)

and

3) Feardotcom.

This is of course, movies I've actually sat through.  If I just liberally used the fast forward button, I dont add it to the list.

I hated Dream Cruise so much, I was literally YELLING at my tv because the back of the case said it was only an hour, and here's the movie just continuing and continuing...I honestly felt like I died and went to hell, watching that movie as my eternal punishment because it JUST WASNT ENDING.  I mean, I have a high tolerance for disbelief suspension in horror.  But this movie was just getting weirder and weirder and more outlandish and convoluted.  My favorite anger inducing logic flaw was this woman gets locked in a bathroom that slowly...ghostly...fills with water.  Room fills up.  Woman's surrounded by water...OH HERE'S AN IDEA.  LET'S HAVE HER HAVE A FLASHBACK!  After fifteen minutes of movie time (all with her totally submerged and still moving), she's somehow able to be resuscitated by the hero after he breaks the door down.  And that's the TIP of the iceberg.

This is hard even in just giving my opinion on what is the WORST horror film.  I have to agree with Peltablo when he says, in otherwords, "Come on people--there's some serious crap out there that you can't hardly remember because it makes your eyes burn when you think about it"  So let's turn over the outhouse aznd expose some shit.

There's some movies we just disagree on --but there have got to be some that WE ALL think suck--let's find those.

I think house of the dead sucked a fatty  and I haven't seen  anyone defend it.  Is that a nomination then?

I think Sleepaway Camp sucks--some very, very, awful acting in that. Other than the ending, I see no redeeming value--but boatloads of folks love this movie (Cryp, Molly)--so It obviously is not the worst movie.

I think I Eat Your Skin and it's sister movie I Drink Your Blood are just hideous wastes of film-- but many folks, included Dr. Menard, love them, so they are not the worst movies ever.

Some of the Halloween movies and Jason movies suck--but are no where near the worst movies ever-- not even Rob's remake.

Diary of the dead --offends me personally and I think George owes us an apology movie for that stinker but many folks love it and it is certainly not the worst movie ever.

I don't think Scream is near the worst movie ever, or hills have eyes 2, or tcm remake.  Not even feardot.com or wicked lake , suck mightily as they did suck--are not remotely the WORST horror movie ever-- we can do better than this folks.

I personally like movies that are much worst than some of those:

Night of the Lepus, Undertaker and His Pals, Plan 9, Dementia 13, Brides of Blood--and alot of that old 60s crap from the Philipines.  I love the Wasp Woman and SSSSSSS and Equinox and even rubber-suit Godzilla movies.

Where's the real stinky stuff? So let's hold our noses and dive in.

I think so far at least we all agree that House of the Dead sucks it dry.

Hell, that movie about the giant Gila Monster sucked alot more than this shit we've mentioned

Nope I like all those bad movies you mentioned and I own them. I would rather watch any of those anyday over some of the glossy over hyped baby shit that comes out now and days. I think a bad movie is more about shitty, over hyped, souless drivel than about budget or bad acting. I mean most people sigh when I say one of my favorite films is I drink your Blood. I thought it kicked ass. So to each his own. Really this is an iffy topic because everyone's taste is different.

You know what? You're right. So I thought about it and maybe the worst type of films might not even be of this beloved genre. Say for instance, shit like Superbad, 40 year old virgin, I think shit like that doesn't even take talent. But even then that might fall into the same deal. This is harder than I thought.

Dead Heat starring Joe Piscopo!  Tho the zombie duck heads were funny.

I probably stand alone in that I hated 1408.

The Haunting remake was terrible...that lead actress, not Catherine Zeta Jones...I don't know her name and wont waste time looking it up...she had to be one of the worst screamers in horror movie history...and you gotta have a great scream.  She just ran around yelling "aaaahhh"...I guess you'd call it hollering.

Nope, you're not alone. I love John Cusack, but my patience was sorely tested with this one. Also, I couldn't do anything but laugh at Samuel L. Jackson, who phoned in his role from any of the other ten gazillion movies in which he played the same character.

Umm...the director of House of the Dead is named Uwe Boll, and I was cursing his pitch black heart for making that travesty.  Now, there's a sci-fi/horror movie with Vin Diesel called Pitch Black that's quite good and is totally worth watching (IMHO).

1408: I thought it was alright, but it certainly wasn't particularly good.  It's a movie that should have been made 10 years ago.

It's probably almost impossible to declare a definitive worst movie of all time due to differences of opinions and differences on what people have actually seen (as I've gotten older and my attention span has declined, if I think a movie on the Sci-fi channel is crappy, I'll stop watching it), but I'm certain it's possible to find some movies that a majority of us find crappy.

Man, Samuel L. Jackson really has become typecast.

Also, just because a movie sucks, doesn't mean that it's completely without merit (though with some particularly crummy movies, it can be damned hard to find the merit).  My cronies and I have a concept of "movies so bad they're good"--like, say, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness.  We love these movies, but I couldn't tell you why other than that they are delightfully hokey (let's face it--they were essentially intended to be cartoons).  A lot of people like Ed Wood's movies for the same reason (I can't watch them without falling asleep myself, but that's just me).

Still, there does seem to be something of an emerging consensus that movies that are too polished and soulless such as The Haunting and Prom Night remakes are particularly awful, going along with the trend of increasing insipidness we're witnessing in the horror genre and Hollywood movies in general.

I wonder if there isn't something we couldn't do ourselves, perhaps some volunteers could come up with a steering committee to properly define the problem and then determine if there is any practical collective action that we in the Ossuary could undertake to cause an improvement such as some sort of petition to prominent Hollywood studios ("hey--how about something that's not a remake, you bastards!") or perhaps somehow investing or contributing to a small movie studio or production group that produces the right kind of horror movies.  Keeping in mind that we would have to be careful about scams and such (and we certainly shouldn't expect to make much or any profit in such an endeavor), how fun would it be to actually contribute in some small way to the production of a movie or work that doesn't suck?

If we don't already have one, we ought to look into seeing if we can generate a short list (say 20 movies or so) of not necessarily the best horror movies, but movies that embody the important concepts (atmosphere, character development, delightfully hokey elements, gratuitous violence, etc.) that we as horror aficionados go out of our way to find in the horror corpus.  This list could be made prominently available on this website as a reference for interested new members (if something like this already exists here, I propose that it be moved to the Ossuary homepage and kept there).

Heh!  You know at some point, we should generate a "Ossuary Horror Fan Manifesto" to perhaps codify things we want to see in horror works and distinguish this group from the various other similar sites on floating around on the net.  I may be in error, but I like to think that a substantive coherent philosophy trumps flashy crap any day of the week.

House of the Dead's been brought up quite a bit in this discussion which is why I came here to show you this.  See...Uwe Boll's out of his mind (generally speaking).  He also knows what he is known for.  Which is where this doubledip to end all doubledips comes in.  I haven't seen House of the Dead, but with this being released, I just might:

House of the Dead Director's Cut

This is Uwe Boll's new "House of the Dead Director's Cut:  Funny Version".  This new version begins with him captured by terrorists and forced to watch his own movie.  In the film itself, now there's more footage from the game, a video game inspired music, all the gore he'd previously excised, and a pop-up video style special feature that plays during the movie of a critic pointing out all the mistakes in his film.

Say what you will about the man, at least he's willing to admit when some of his stuff is a pile of crap.

I disagree I'll totally stand up for some of these

Hostel- the first one really wasn't that bad definetely not the worst, I'm not even sure why ppl dont like it

carrie 2 and the I know what you did last summers- are obviously made for kids ages 8-14, how can they even be compared to other movies of the genre, Thats right I totally watched these movies at sleepovers when I was in elementary school and they were great

Sleepaway Camp- totally perfect cheese to horror ratio, if this were a food it'd be a taco and who doesn't like tacos

Point being these aren't the aweful craptastic movies that we are looking for

P.S- Pumpboy I thought Dementia 13 was a porno with men in blue laytex? or am I thinking of Dementia (someother number, perhaps 14)

And now I shall do the same:

Hostel:  I understand people don't like them because of violence and gore and the opening segments with all the sex.  But seriously, get the heck over it.  They are definitely not that bad.  Plus theres a whole psychological element in both thats very good if you know what to look for.

Sleepaway Camp:  I will defend and fight for both it and its sequels until my dying breath.  It's cheesy in the best possible way.

Sleepwalkers:  Even I can't defend that piece of garbage.

I Know What You Did Last Summer:  Let's divorce the things that originated a genre shift from the overdone garbage that came after please.  It's sequel's garbage.  But the original's got a lot of good stuff in it.

Carrie 2:  By the same token, just because a movie is something's sequel doesn't mean one should compare it to the original.  If the characters are the same, and its in the same universe, etc., then yes.  Compare.  But the Rage pretty much uses different characters, different ideas, different storylines.  It's more of an updating than a sequel or a remake and is better than people give it credit for.

In summation, I'm not saying you can't not like a film.  That's fine.  But this is the WORST HORROR MOVIES EVER thread.  And if that's the case, then, of the ones I've seen that you mentioned, I'd only put Sleepwalkers on that list....what the hell was that thing.

"Sleepaway Camp- totally perfect cheese to horror ratio, if this were a food it'd be a taco and who doesn't like tacos"

Nicely put, Molly.

I would like to nominate Alien vs. Predator: Requiem as the worst recent movie, I fell asleep and had no desire to revisit what I had missed.

Also, feardotcom was wretched, Wes Craven's Them was a yawnfest, and The Happening was pathetic, but what do you expect from Hollywood and the joke that M. Night Shamalamadingdong has become. Unbreakable was the last thing he did that was fully good, I liked Signs up until the ridiculous ending and after that, who cares? This is why it's best to avoid the mainstream at all costs, or at least be open to the glorious goodness that is outside of it.

Opinions are like assholes...everybody's got one.Laughing

Hostel- I did like the last 20 minutes or so, but I felt as though I had to sit through an hour of bullshit to get there

Carrie 2- I made no comparisons, just thought it sucked

Sleepaway Camp- I thought it was bad, not the worst

I'm all for gore and cheese and I would watch any horror good or bad.

And I have watched so many horror films over the past 22 years (some only once) that I would really have to dig deep to find the worst. I think the worst is yet to come.

I agree wholeheartedly on feardotcom, though I have always wondered if we would feel the same way about it if the American version of The Ring hadnt been released before it.  I've always considered it along the same lines and thus think its a boring ripoff.

And as for The Happening.....I loved it.  But full disclosure, I loved it as a HILARIOUS comedy.  It is by NO means a good horror movie.

And my personal favorite way to make fun of his last name was one i heard during Rue Morgue Radio podcast's review of The Happening:  M. Night Shawitdabadibangdibangdiggydiggydiggysaidtheboogysaidupjumptheboogy.

Just a few I think are bad:

Hostel

99% of SciFi Originals

Sleepaway Camp(boring)

The Dead Hate The Living

Sleepwalkers

Thinner(good book, bad movie)

I  Know (and still know) What You Did Last Summer(who cares)

Carrie 2: The Rage

The Mangler 2

there are many others, but this should do for now

No Dementia 13 was an old black n white about an ax murderer--I liked it alot--very creepy underated slasher film.  Your "Dementia . . "  -- i don't know Molly--does your mom know what you're watching?

I'm pretty positive that Homecoming from the Masters of Horror series was the worst attempt at horror I've ever seen.

The Revenge of Dr. X!  That movie was awesome!  In fact that was one of my fav on that Chillers Pack.  There were a lot of good ones on that...lady frankenstine, driller killer, Dr. Tarrs Torture Dungen, Shock!...ok, well this isnt a post about movies i like, sorry.

I, personally love old horror and scifi.  I like the sorta cheesy drive through movie type horror more then most new horror.

I was gonna say House of the Dead but someone already said it.  God, i couldnt even sit through it and i ALWAYS finish movies even if they suck!

There's an old House of the Dead (also called Alien Zone) thats pretty good....i think it might be in the Chillers pack,I cant remember.

Obviously, YOU never saw Dream Cruise in Season Two.....lol

(And yes, I'm going to avoid discussing Homecoming.  Suffice to say I loved it, but I know that its a divisive movie.  Basically, my feeling is:  Just because you disagree with the politics doesnt make it bad.  It's a bit heavy-handed in it's political commentary, true, but it has a lot of little things that make it fun for me.  And yes, I know it's not scary and it's not really horror, but the point of Masters of Horror was greater than the name of the show.  It's dark stories really.  So Homecoming's more "political commentary with zombies" than horror.  And if you aren't ok with that then I can see how you would not like the ep.  For me though, that variety is how you get what I thought were great psychological eps like Chocolate and Sounds Like.  )

I totally agree on liking drive-in movie horror (even though I like a decent amount of modern stuff too).  That's why its usually really hard for me to TOTALLY hate a movie because I love some hysterical movies that make me laugh with their b-movieness (The Happening comes to mind.  And movies like Redneck Zombies and Dracula Vs. Frankenstein)  The ones I mentioned earlier in this thread are the main ones that I find NO redeeming qualities in.

Oh I totally agreed with the politics, I guess I was just expecting a smidge of horror thrown in there.  Zombies were rising from the grave and everyone was just like "eh, no biggie", aside from some army dudes in the begining.  SPOILER ALERT* Also, when that kid shot his bro there should have been some type of recoil or something, it was just up and down a ridiculous movie and I'm sure I would have appreciated it much more if it was just "a random political movie". In my opinion the director, who is largely known for directing Gremlins?, made an ass out of himself by using the opportunity to make an already well-known political statement.  It completely wastes your time by providing very little suspense or thrills, there are no twists or turns, there is nothing fresh or stimulating about watching republicans getting bashed for 60 minutes.  If Dante is seriously this into making a statement he should go on the news, do and interview, make an appearance on The Daily Show or the Colbert Report, just don't waste decent horror fans time and money.
I bought a bunch of these movies in the course of a few weeks and Dream Cruise was one of them. hahahahaha I've yet to watch it but now I CANT WAIT.

Valid point.  That's why I called it "political commentary with zombies" and not horror.  They did kinda stretch the term quite a bit at times.

And I should warn you now.  The version of Dream Cruise released on dvd (that I saw) is not what was on tv.  On TV, it's an hour.  On dvd....ITS EXTENDED. Even though the case says 60 minutes.  I was literally watching at the hour mark, YELLING at my tv for it to stop.  lol  I can handle some logic gaps but holy hell, wait till you see how long, in real time, one character is submerged in a bathroom.  That's all I'm going to say.  lol
